Project Overview

In response to an impending impromptu audit, I executed an accelerated an arc flash and short circuit study for a massive, six-building industrial testing campus. The project required rapid data collection and analysis to ensure the facility met all safety, insurance, and regulatory requirements on an urgent timeline.

Core Services Provided

  • Expedited One-Line Documentation: Developed and updated accurate single-line diagrams for the entire six-building electrical network, providing the foundation for campus-wide safety and maintenance.
  • Arc Flash Study: Performed a full Short Circuit Analysis and Arc Flash Study to determine fault levels and incident energy across all critical nodes.

  • Safety Labeling & Compliance:Expedited the application of Arc Flash labeling across the campus, ensuring 100% compliance with NFPA 70E and OSHA requirements.

  • Deficiency Identification: Performed a broad sweeping deficiencies check, identifying and prioritizing infrastructure risks that required immediate remediation prior to the audit.

  • Audit Advocacy: Provided the technical documentation and engineering validation necessary to satisfy the Fortune 200 company’s internal and external auditors.

Technical Impact

  • Rapid Turnaround: Successfully completed the campus-wide analysis under an expedited schedule, allowing the client to pass their audit, avoiding non-conformance penalties.

  • Risk Mitigation: By identifying system deficiencies early, the facility was able to address safety hazards before they led to equipment failure or personnel injury.

  • Operational Transparency: The updated one-line diagrams provided the facility's maintenance teams with the clarity needed for safe switching and future expansion.

Project Summary

This project involved the electrical revitalization of an abandoned data center. The goal was to reclaim the facility’s utility and standby power assets to support a new 1,200 amp mission-critical load. By integrating an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) and existing standby generation, the design achieved a dual-source power architecture for maximum uptime.

Technical Highlights & Service Delivery

  • Dual-Source Power Integration: Engineered the connection between utility service and the existing onsite generator through a newly integrated ATS, ensuring the 1,200 amp Distribution Center has seamless access to redundant power.

  • Connected Load Analysis: Performed a detailed load analysis of the client's existing facility to determine maximum server load that could be connected. This data-driven approach allowed the customer to optimize rack density while maintaining safe operating margins.

  • Power Systems Analysis: Conducted a Short Circuit Analysis to verify equipment ratings and implemented Arc Flash reduction measures to lower incident energy, ensuring NFPA 70E compliance and technician safety.

  • Engineering Oversight & Permitting: Acted as the primary technical lead for the permitting process, navigating jurisdictional codes to successfully integrate legacy infrastructure with modern distribution components.

  • Owner's Representative Engineer: Provided real-time technical guidance during equipment procurement to verify that selected electrical gear met system requirements and compatibility needs.

Operational Impact

  • Informed Scaling: The Connected Load Analysis provided the client with a clear roadmap for server deployment, preventing over-provisioning and infrastructure strain.

  • Reliability: Established a redundant power path protecting against utility outages.

  • Safety & Compliance: Reduced "request for information" (RFI) cycles during permitting and provided a safer work environment through arc flash mitigation.

  • Profitability: Cost efficient design minimized first costs to owner and maximized ROI.
